Testimony Workshop: I Am
2011-2012

This workshop took place of the course of the 2011-2012 year. Every Saturday for an hour I worked with these fabulous young ladies in a movement/choreography workshop focused on building a sense of community, self-awareness, self-confidence, and more. The workshop began with the question “What is a woman?” to which they collectively decided the top 5 things were: caring, fierce, beautiful, strong, and wise. From this, I had them create movements that represented each of these words, asking them to think outside the box of basic, common poses, and associate the 5 characteristics of women, not with a general view, but with an assertive “I Am…” From there, I asked them to research gods/goddesses of any culture, and find one that they most relate to and be able to explain why. This workshop included other homework/tasks such as writing letters to themselves 5 years in the past, 5 years in the future, and in the present (letters were written in September and returned to students in June so they could see their growth in 1 year), bringing in their favorite pair of heels and explaining why, etc. I participated as well so they knew that I was fully engaged in support of their development not only as dancers but as young women, as all, but 1, were in high school. The sharing of ourselves as women and dancers created a beautiful, seven minute piece that each of them had ownership of.
