Every New Year’s Eve, millions of Americans have a great time partying with friends, but unfortunately, criminals often break-into houses at the same time. Thieves prefer to commit their crimes while residents are outside of their homes, and many thieves realize that the majority of American homes are empty during the late hours on New Year’s Eve. If your house is empty and you haven’t taken very many home security precautions, then it is an easy target and is likely to get broken into. Not only are criminals who want to rob you a threat, but so are drunken teenagers who like to vandalize homes. Whether your valuable items get stolen, or whether someone causes thousands of dollars of damage to your house, you won’t be happy either way. Protect yourself this New Year’s Eve with some of these easy home security measures.
5. Make sure you leave lights on both inside and outside your house. By making it seem like someone is home, you will greatly reduce the chances that anyone will try to break in on New Year’s Eve. Both thieves and vandals want to target houses that appear to be empty, so just turn several lights on to make it seem as though you are there. If you don’t already have lights installed on the outside or your house, it is a cheap process to install a few, especially when you consider how expensive it could be to repair your house or replace your belongings. Take care to light up the areas around your doors and windows in particular.
4. Host your New Year’s Celebrations at home. If you invite all of your friends and family members over to your house for New Year’s Eve, then your house will actually be occupied by many people, which will greatly help increase your home security. So instead of going over to someone else’s house for a party, simply host it at your own instead.
3. Rely on a home alarm system to keep your house safe. If you’re going to go out and you want the maximum level of protection at your house, then simply install a home alarm. With an alarm, you and the authorities will be able to respond quickly if someone breaks in, and you’ll also scare away any thieves or vandals who may trigger the alarm, so they won’t have enough time to really cause damage inside your house.
2. Place warning signs outside of your house. If you have an alarm installed, or you have a large dog, then both of those things can help scare criminals and vandals away. By placing large signs on your property, you can ensure that no one will want to target your house this New Year’s Eve.

Since so many people do that, everyone is aware that those are key locations to find spare keys. Both criminals and vandals check those locations for spare keys, and if they find one, it is much easier to get access to the inside of your house. So it’s much safer for you to not leave a spare key outside and to run the risk of getting locked out.
