MY OPINION
This is only my opinion on bridal showers.
I was invited to a bridal shower a couple of weekends ago and it made me start to think about tradition and how things have changed so much.
I received my invite via Facebook messaging, which that is new. What ever happened to the day when you received things through the real mail? Oh well, I was invited, a couple of days before the shower. So much for time to get a gift or make something.
I decided to call my mom and get her opinion on how showers have changed. I asked her what the bridal shower was all about. My fears were confirmed. We are not doing things correctly. The original shower was for the women from the different families to come together and offer all the tools, ideas, advice, and recipes that this new bride would need to start her new role as a wife. They may even take a few minutes to show her how to prepare and cook meals for her new husband.
They might even talk to her about cleaning tips, and some secret ways of cleaning, but this is not true today. Most of the time they will eat a prepared meal that only requires the microwave or oven. Maybe go out to eat as opposed to staying at home and cooking the meal.
So you end up sending money as this is the only gift that you feel is what they may or may not need. They have lived together for a couple of years and you are sure that they have everything that they need to set up housekeeping, cooking and everything else. So I have to ask why the bridal shower? What is the purpose of this? Whatever happened to tradition? When did we stop doing the bridal showers the way we used to? Who changed this and why? How do the women of these families meet and help the new bride start her new home?
I guess all in all it really does not matter except as we lose one tradition in is so hard to get it back and make the new generations understand what things are about. I sometimes thing we should all stand back, think about how families used to do things and maybe start doing them again.
Oh well this is just my opinion.
