In this amazing trick, the Magician threads a mint sweet on a piece of string and has a spectator hold each end. He then gives the mint a rub and it passes straight through the string! Would you like to know how it is done? Then read on to find out how to amaze your friends!
How It Looks To The Audience
The Magician takes a Polo Mint (a round mint with a hole in the middle) and threads it on a piece of string. He then asks a spectator to hold both ends of the string and covers the string with a handkerchief. He puts his hands under the handkerchief and says he is giving the Polo Mint a magic rub. When he lifts the handkerchief from the string, the Polo Mint drops free of the string!
How The Trick Is Done
Cut a Polo Mint in half with a razor blade and then coat the cut ends with some rubber cement like Copydex, which can be found in most offices. When the rubber cement is dry, press the two halves together again. If you have done the job properly, then the join will not be visible to as casual inspection. Put a duplicate Mint and a handkerchief in your pocket.
Show the prepared Mint to the spectator and then thread in onto the piece of string. After you have done this, ask the spectator to hold both ends of the string. One end in each hand. Then bring the handkerchief out of your pocket. As you are doing so, pick up the duplicate Mint and keep it concealed in your curled fingers.
Cover the string with the handkerchief and say that you are going to demonstrate how to pass one solid object through another. But first, you must give the Mint a magic rub. Having said that, you place both your hands under the handkerchief and push a loop of the string through the middle of the Mint and then down over one side. The will trap the Mint in a slip knot.
Then separate the two halves of the prepared Mint and conceal them in your left, curled fingers
Bring both your hands out from under the handkerchief and use your left hand to pull away the handkerchief. Then put the handkerchief and the pieces of the prepared Mint into your pocket.
Ask the spectator to watch carefully. Cover the Mint with your hands and lift the loop over the side of the Mint. Then pull the Mint downwards. It will come free from the slip knot and look as though it has passed straight through the string! You can then give the Mint and the string to the spectator to be examined.
