DIRECTOR’S NOTE

“Essentielle” is a passion project that started with a conversation amongst men, on women’s position and treatment in our society. By the end of our discussion, we came up with an idea for a short film that would highlight women’s struggles and the way society still views them, in an effort to make them feel more heard and understood.

We conducted research on women’s roles in our society throughout the history of the civilised world and concluded that women are still wrongfully placed in the target of men.

The film depicts a woman “temptation”, who never asked to be described in that way. This title was given to her before she could even think for herself or get the chance to discover her identity. A woman “sin”. A woman who is expected to carry the responsibilities assigned to her gender. A woman who continues living life and does not give up. Who, despite all the daily struggles and her own internal battles, still fights the social constructs.

Through our short film “Essentielle”, we aspire to make women feel heard and understood and to make men more aware of what a woman feels like in this day and age. There is hope, but equality will come only with communication and understanding.

With the hope to be seen and heard,
Ionas Zarogiannis & Stylianos Thomadakis
