“We Are Burning” is an excerpt from the chamber opera “Eternal Burning”, a multi-movement work with music, movement ideation, and poetry created by Amanda Schoofs.
We are Burning
My lungs, full of stars
An intimate exploration, “Eternal Burning” poetically illuminates the identity-altering phenomenon of pregnancy and birth. Rooted in the post #metoo culture of assertive empowerment, it embraces the strength of volition, transformation, and resilience.
Featuring three soloists who represent different aspects of the same self: a Provocateur, an Ancient Knowing, and Volition, with a chorus of performers who support “the self,” my opera deeply connects to the radical affair of creating a small human and the intense relationships that reveal themselves through this transition.
In an era infused with systemic and blatant sexism and the egregious silencing and shaming of women’s voices, especially maternal voices, I hope Eternal Burning sparks something within you that will help you to create a space for our voices to be free.
