The ancient Magi cards are similar to the Tarot and other Divination decks of cards as well as the regular playing cards we are so familiar with. This system is also referred to as the Mystic Cards and the Quadrate system. It is also similar to Astrology in that there are elements and planetary energies affecting the Magi Card natal and progressed charts.
There are four Suits. Each suit has it’s characteristics that affect those whose primary Magi birth cards are of that suit. In reality, our complete Birthday chart often has all or most all the suits represented, but are defined within certain perimeters. A Venus Heart card functions differently than a Saturn Heart card for example..
In fact, it should be said that a Magi Card chart with all its many facets and layers, operates much like an Astrology chart. There are millions of people, for example, who have Sun in Aries and have the same very general content written about that Sun sign. What makes it unique is the position of that Sun sign, its relationship to all the other cards in the chart by aspect and dignity and transit. The same holds true for the Magi cards and their card number, suit and position. The chart is a blend of the whole, not just one card taken alone.
Still, that is where we begin in our studies. First, one must learn the meanings of the 4 Suits, which is what this article is about. Then one must learn the meanings of the 10 numbers in each Suit and the Court Cards. For example, all 3’s have certain traits in common, as do each of the other numbers. Last, we study the meaning of a specific card in a suit and relate it to the position they hold in the chart.
From there, in advanced studies, we learn to blend the meanings, and go into the layers of the chart spreads… the 13 year card, the 7 year card, the 4 year card, the Year cards, the Season cards, the Lunar month cards, the Weekly and the Daily cards.
To start, let’s look at the general meaning of the Suits:
The Four Card Suits
HEARTS Suit. It represents the Season of Spring and the element of Fire.
Spring is the beginning of the growth cycle. It is a creative time, and those of this suit greatly appreciate the Arts, beautiful things, harmony and peace. Love and relationships are very important and Hearts people tend to have many friends. Home and family is very important to them. They are passionate and put their heart into what they do. They tend to be emotional and have empathy. However, they can wear their feelings on their sleeve and get hurt and offended easily. Some are lazy or too pleasure oriented. Loving unconditionally will overcome self-centered tendencies.
CLUBS Suit. It represents the Season of Summer and the element of Air.
Summer is the time when things are growing and flourishing. Clubs rule over the mental attributes and some are quite brilliant. They love knowledge, learning, communicating and disseminating ideas. They, too, are creative and often excellent writers. They are clever in discovering, obtaining and sharing information. It’s the suit of high intelligence, but they can become too mental, over-analytical, too opinionated, even arrogant. Being so much in their head can bring indecisiveness due to a muddled feeling when overwhelmed. They can be stubborn in their views. They need to strive to be open and flexible, think also with the heart and be willing to work with and listen to others and their views.
DIAMONDS Suit. It represents the Season of Autumn or Fall and the element of Earth.
Autumn is the period of the Harvest when things come to fruition and gains are to be had. Especially financial gains. It’s the suit of business talents and having good sense. It’s material, yes, but it is also the suit of high values, high morals and good ethics. One looks to create value and have a healthy sense of self-worth. Diamond people need to guard being materialistic, however, and/or becoming fearful about money or becoming miserly and selfish or doubting their self-worth. Don’t equate having money with what your value as a person is. It isn’t!
SPADES Suit. It represents the Season of Winter and the element of Water.
In winter, cycles are completed, it’s a slower deeper time and it’s a period of quiet preparation for the new. It’s usually felt as a heavier period and work, labor and health issues are dealt with. It represents seriousness and hard workers who are reliable, organized, determined, practical, have tenacity and self-discipline. It’s also the suit of spiritual wisdom and inner reflection and growth. It’s the suit of rebirth and transformation. Many of this suit are “old souls”. These people need to make sure they don’t get stuck in a rut, be too rigid or fearful. They need to take care of their health, have good life habits to support this. Don’t become workaholics or ignore the spiritual. All have a creative side and developing/expressing this is a wonderful way to grow, lighten up and be a positive person as well as the constructive reliable person.
Now let’s give an example to see how the different Suits may relate in a situation. Let’s say that a person has just experienced a traumatic difficult event in their life. It brings sadness to their heart, they feel worried and they don’t know what to do, but yearn for some relief and answers. Fortunately he/she has many friends who care.
Friend #1, a Heart, comes to their aid. The Heart Person has a lot of empathy and feels the sadness right along with him/her, giving them the much needed emotional support and love. He assures them that he is there for them and will be a good listener anytime.
Friend #2, a Club, is energetic and positive, so he tries to cheer him up, tries to help him find something positive in the situation. He has lots of ideas and helps them explore possible solutions. He is objective, so he can see all sides and helps them evaluate it rationally and objectively.
Friend #3, a Diamond has a great sense of fairness and common sense. (Not that individuals in other suits don’t, but Diamonds are best known for the trait) They will help him evaluate the event/circumstances to see what value there is or lack thereof. Is there any hidden worth in the matter? What is the morality of it? They are keen in understanding these and will help them sort it out in a very practical way. No pie in the sky….. just what really can be done practically. And if there are finances or contracts involved, they are quite astute in these matters, having great business sense.
Friend #4, a Spade, will be quite down to earth, like the Diamond, and may suggest that they get back to work as quickly as possible, or in some way keep busy while allowing this to pass. They will likely also suggest some spiritual solutions, and urge them to have faith and trust in the Universe, letting go. No point in trying to hang on. You’re free only when you let go, they’ll say. In fact they may suggest a technique to use….. they are full of “techniques”, like the Sedona Release Method. They may suggest that this may all turn out in their favor in the long run. They get the big picture.
