Are women really better drivers than men? That’s the question that’s been plaguing drivers for years. Most men will willingly admit that women are perfectly capable drivers, but if you ask them who’s the better driver between themselves and their wife/girlfriend they usually say they are. So why is their car insurance company telling a different story?
Oddly enough, when it comes to the number of car accidents that take place each year men and women are just about neck and neck. Statistically speaking, women are just as likely to have an accident as men. So why are women paying so much less for their car insurance rates?
Because while women are more likely than men to get distracted and find themselves in the middle of a fender bender, men are more likely to do the job on a major scale. Men are almost five times more likely than women to be involved in a fatal accident. Why? They tend to be more aggressive drivers, willingly pushing the boundaries, going just a little faster, just a little farther.
From your car insurance company’s point of view, that’s a bad thing. The car insurance claims that go along with fatal accidents tend to be both extensive and expensive, and insurers that pay out more in claims than they take in in premiums aren’t going to stay in business very long! Sorry guys, the numbers have been working against you since long before you picked up your first set of car keys, and until statistics change you’re still going to be paying more for your car insurance than the women in your life.
Of course, that doesn’t mean you’re destined to spend the rest of your life paying a small fortune for your coverage. As long as you keep your driving record clean and resist the urge to keep up with the traffic in the fast lane on the interstate there’s no reason you should have to break the bank to pay for your coverage. If you really want to close the gap that’s sprung up because of your gender why not try:
· Beef up the security on your car. Car insurance companies pay hundreds of thousands each year to repair and replace cars that have been vandalized or stolen. Car alarms, GPS locator systems and fuel switches can go a long way toward keeping your car safe and your insurance rates swimming above water.
· Check with your insurance before buying your car. Certain cars are more expensive to insure than others, either because they’re (statistically) more likely to be involved in an accident or because they cost more to replace. Choosing a car that’s insurance friendly can save you hundreds when you’re talking about your car insurance rates.
· See what discounts you’re eligible for. Your age, where you live and where you work can all do wonders to bring down your car insurance rates and close the gap that’s sprung up in the wake of the gender wars.
