Soon after your relationship breakup, it’s pretty common to start wondering if it’s possible to get your ex back. This is a natural reaction, and sometimes it’s more painful for you to endure than the problems that caused the breakup in the beginning.

In most breakups, you really can get your ex back if that is truly what you want. But making it happen requires you to the right approach and do things the right way.

First of all, ask yourself this: should I try to fix this relationship? Everyone feels lost and lonely after a breakup. But is “feeling down” enough reason for you to get back with your ex? Most likely you had some very real problems at the root of your breakup. If you blindly follow your anxious desire to get back together, you may try to ignore these problems instead of fixing them.

But if you have genuine reasons for wanting to get back together with your ex, now is the time for you to deal with those problems they cause the breakup. You need to fix the things that are broken. Hold on, though! Don’t go rushing off to fix everything just yet. Healing a relationship requires a certain kind of treatment. You need to do the right things in the right order. Here are the steps you should follow:

The First Step: You Should Date Someone Else

Sounds strange, right? If you’re trying to get back with your ex, how could it possibly help to start dating someone else? To begin with, concentrate on the word date. Don’t run out and get tangled up in a new romance. Dating other people is going to help you figure out two things.

First, dating someone else will actually help you decide if you should fix the old relationship or move on. As you spend time with someone else, you may realize that you’re no longer thinking about your ex at all. This may indicate that you’re ready to move on.

Second, dating someone else will also give you a little space to reflect on the last relationship. It will give you something to compare to and provide information for the next step.

Step Two: You Must Know What Happened

If you don’t understand what went wrong with your last relationship, you may end up repeating the same mistakes. You don’t want your life to be a string of failed relationships, do you? So you might as will figure out now what went wrong. You may make all new mistakes in your next relationship, but the least you won’t be repeating the old ones.

Step Three: You Must Not Rush Things

You should not expect to fix a broken relationship one day and take up right where you left off. Forget about continuing the old relationship. Rather, you must get it into your head that you are starting things over and you need to let things progress naturally. If you really want to run your ex off more quickly than the first time, then just start pushing too far and too fast. (Hint: This means if you don’t want to run them off, then don’t push.)
