By the year 1850, the colors used to dye the textiles were made from natural things, have you ever noticed that colors affect our emotions? It is not surprising that for centuries people have preferred to dye or print textile. And for this, he has used a method that we call dyeing.
Natural indigo was the only source of the dye until about 1913 Within a short time, however, synthetic indigo had almost completely superseded natural indigo, and today nearly all indigo produced is synthetic.

Into the secrets of indigo dyes
India is known as the first major centre of production for indigo dyes.
India and China have nearly 5000-year-old traditions of natural dyeing
Natural indigo is a plant-based dye derived from the leaves of the plant Indigofera tinctoria and related species. About a hundred years ago advances in organic chemistry made the development of a synthetic indigo possible. Today the much cheaper synthetic indigo is used for the production of indigo blue clothing’s.
UNDERSTANDING THE NATURAL INDIGO DYEING PROCESS
Indigo plant, named as “Indigofera tinctoria”, was discovered around 1600s (B.C.). Indigo dyestuff, extracted from its leaves, had been used in various primitive dyeing processes for years.
Indigo dyestuff which is classified as vat dye is insoluble in water, Indigo creates living colours on fabrics. Indigo dyestuff can never fully penetrate into the fibre, since its molecule is so big and it only adheres to the surface and remains at outer surface of the fibre. The inside stays white. It abrades or fades continually.
At present what raises concern is the reduction technique in indigo dyeing. The use of sodium hydrosulphite as a reducing agent is associated with several environmental issues.
Alternate reducing systems have been explored, such as organic reducing agent, biological reduction.

राजस्थान की नील INDIGO – IN – RAJASTHAN
Until the beginning of 20th Century, Rajasthan was cultivating Indigo and extracting the deep rich blue dye from it. The sub tropical climate of Rajasthan was favourable to Indigo cultivation. Many surviving members of the dyer community such as the Neelgar and Rangreez and the block printers like the Chippa, Bhavsar and Khatri attest to this fact.
